The Filipino Basketball League (FBL) has quickly become a hub for sports enthusiasts in New Zealand since its inception. Founded by Rico De Guzman in partnership with AJ Motors, FBL kicked off its inaugural season in August 2023 with 10 teams battling for glory. The first season concluded successfully in April 2024, paving the way for a bigger and better second season in June 2024, featuring 12 teams.
Expanding Horizons
FBL is not just about basketball; it’s a growing sports community. Currently, the league hosts three basketball categories:
- Legends League: A division for players aged 40 and above.
- Open League: An inclusive category welcoming players of all skill levels.
- Mosquito League: A developmental league designed for kids, fostering talent and passion for the game at an early age.
- Papawis: a fun, social basketball game designed for players of all skill levels to enjoy the sport, build camaraderie, and stay active. It’s all about breaking a sweat, having a good time, and fostering community without the pressure of competition.
Beyond the League: Clinics and Training
FBL also focuses on skill development through its basketball clinic program in partnership with Hoops Learn Hub and B4Basketball. These clinics are designed to nurture aspiring players, providing them with proper training and guidance to excel in the sport.
Vision and Mission
FBL’s mission is to promote basketball not just within the Filipino community but across New Zealand. By fostering inclusivity and encouraging active participation, the league aims to build a strong and supportive sports community where people of all ages and backgrounds can thrive.
